Closed Positions

Use Closed Positions to view closing transactions made in your accounts. Select Closed Positions from the Accounts menu or select Closed Positions from the Account tool.

While the information on closed positions is accurate and helpful, it may not be substituted for an official report or statement required by a tax authority. Select Statements from the Accounts menu, or, when on the Closed Positions view, use the right-click menu to quickly navigate to your statements.

Note: Closed positions information is not available for mutual fund accounts.

  • Positions Summary

You can see a summary of the Total Gain/Loss (G/L), Short-Term G/L, and Long-Term G/L for the selected accounts from the summary row located above the Positions grid.

  • Viewing Lots

Select the arrow located to the left of the symbol to view lot information for the closed position. The Closed Lots view provides cost basis and gain/loss information for all lots that have been closed in the position.

  • Wash Sale Treatment

If there was a wash sale for a transaction, a W will be displayed to the right of the symbol, with disallowed loss information available on hover. To show unadjusted cost basis information in your Closed Positions display, check the Unadj G/L box located to the right of the Security filter at the top of the tool. If it appears information is missing, you may need to have your account replayed. Call us at 800-544-6666 for assistance.

Note: If you incur a realized loss on a security and you repurchase additional shares of the same security 30 days before or after the sale, the repurchase may result in the loss being deferred under the "wash sale" provisions of the Internal Revenue Code. In the event of a wash sale, Fidelity may adjust the Acquisition Date of the newly acquired securities to include the holding period of the disallowed loss. Purchases include shares acquired through reinvested dividends. Other transactions may result in loss deferrals including "straddles" and certain option strategies. You should consult your tax advisor for additional information."

  • Sorting and Filtering Your Closed Positions

By default, year-to-date closing transactions are displayed. To adjust the timeframe, use one of the time periods available in the Date dropdown or select Custom to enter a specific date range. Using the custom date range feature, you can search up to 10 years of closed positions history in 5-year increments. You may also filter your results by a particular security by entering the symbol. For expired options or fixed income securities, enter the CUSIP. If your search is taking a long time to return records, use the date and/or symbol filters to narrow down your search criteria.
