Searching for Stocks

The first step toward intelligent, informed investing is to determine your investment goals, then identify stocks that will potentially help you achieve these goals. Fidelity.com's wide range of online search tools provide many different ways to search for and identify stocks, to support all types of investors.

What types of searches are available?

Fidelity.com offers several ways to search for stocks:

Once you've performed a search, take the time to explore each security in your results carefully. You can easily access additional research about a company or view price quotes. You can also refine your criteria for a more precise result, create a watch list to track the companies of interest, execute a trade, and save your criteria for future use.

What is a quick search?

You can perform a quick stock search from the Research > Stocks or Search Methods/Stock Screener pages. Simply select any combination of investment style (growth, blend, value, or all), sector (for example, energy, health care, or utilities), and market cap (large, mid, or small). Click Search to view the results.

What is a frequently used criteria search?

You can get started quickly with a little sophistication by performing a frequently used criteria search from the Search Methods page. Select any combination of the ten most popular search criteria to find stocks that support your investment goals, then click Continue to enter values for your criteria. What is an advanced search?

Advanced searches return specific, highly targeted lists of candidate stock investments. Advanced searches let you create and run custom searches based on any combination of over 100 criteria. For example, you can search on criteria related to sector, valuation, growth, trading and volume, earnings announcements, profitability and management, technical analysis, environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, and more. What are independent expert strategies?

If you're not sure where to begin looking for stocks, you can search using expert stock search strategies, organized by investment style. Stock search strategies have been developed by third-party professionals, each with a specific investment goal in mind. You can use expert search strategies to find stocks that match the predefined criteria, or you can use them as jumping off points for creating your own search strategy. By modifying the search criteria or its values, you can tailor the strategy to better suit your needs. See Independent Expert Search Strategies for complete details.

How do I search for preferred stocks?

To search for preferred stocks, click Search for Preferred Stocks on the Research page, or Start a preferred stock search on the Search for Stocks page and the Advanced Search page. You can search for preferred stocks by any combination of various equity criteria, including Stock Price, Dividend Yield, Sector & Industry, EBITD Margin, Revenue Growth, Cash Flow Growth, Revenue, Debt to Capital Ratio, Interest Coverage, Volume, and Exchange.

How do I rerun my last search?

You can always rerun your last search by clicking Rerun Last Search on the Search Methods page or the Advanced Searches/Stock Screener page.

Can I save the criteria that I have selected for a particular search?

If you have created a search that you would like to run again in the future, you can save the criteria you have chosen by clicking Save Criteria at the top of the Results page. Enter a name for this set of criteria on the Save Search Criteria page, and click Save. You can save up to 25 sets of search criteria, which you can easily rerun from the Search Methods page, or rerun and manage from the Saved Searches pages. What is a Stock Scorecard?

A Stock Scorecard compares a stock of your choice to the results of an independent expert search strategy or your own new or saved search. In other words, use the Stock Scorecard to see how a particular stock measures up to a particular search strategy. For example, if you perform a search and do not see a stock you expected to see, use the Stock Scorecard to see why the search did not return the particular stock.

You can rerun a saved search on the Saved Searches/Saved Screens page by clicking the name of the saved search in the list.

What is the universe of companies used in the stock searches?

Stock searches on Fidelity.com let you sort through a universe of more than 8,000 securities using more than 100 customizable criteria based on key information about the security, including valuation, growth, profitability, analyst opinions, technical events, and more. By applying different criteria, you narrow the universe of securities included in your search. For example, when you choose price-to-earnings (P/E) as a criterion, the universe of stocks includes only those stocks with earnings per share (EPS) greater than zero.

Preferred stock searches on Fidelity.com let you sort through a universe of hundreds of preferred securities using 13 customizable equity criteria based on key information about the security, including Stock Price, Dividend Yield, Sector & Industry, EBITD Margin, Revenue Growth, Cash Flow Growth, Revenue, Debt to Capital Ratio, Interest Coverage, Volume, and Exchange. By applying the different criteria, you narrow the universe of preferred securities included in your search. For example, when you choose Dividend Yield as a criterion, the universe of preferred stocks includes only those preferred stocks with Dividend Yield greater than zero.

Please note that the universe of preferred stocks for searches is limited to securities where quality data is available on the hybrid security. Fidelity is actively working with data providers to increase the universe of preferred securities for searches.

Where does the stock search data come from?

Stock search data available on Fidelity.com is provided by third parties and not Fidelity. Delayed quotes are delayed at least 15 minutes. Historical prices and earnings estimates are provided by Refinitiv.
