Sector Update: Health Care Stocks Decline in Afternoon Trading

02:03 PM EDT, 04/15/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Health care stocks declined Tuesday afternoon, with the NYSE Health Care Index shedding 0.7% and the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) down 0.8%.

The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) retreated 0.7%.

In corporate news, Johnson & Johnson ( JNJ ) lifted its full-year operational and reported sales outlook after better-than-expected Q1 results, buoyed by double-digit revenue gains from oncology and cardiovascular products. The shares still eased 0.4%.

Spruce Biosciences ( SPRB ) said Tuesday it entered into an asset purchase agreement with BioMarin Pharmaceutical ( BMRN ) to buy global rights to tralesinidase alfa enzyme replacement therapy, or TA-ERT, to potentially treat rare genetic disease Sanfilippo Syndrome Type B. Spruce shares fell more than 57% and BioMarin rose 0.4%.

GeoVax Labs ( GOVX ) shares tumbled nearly 18% after the company said late Monday Advanced Technology International notified the company to stop work on its phase 2b study evaluating the GEO-CM04S1 COVID-19 vaccine.
