(Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump intends to nominate Ohio Solicitor General T. Elliot Gaiser to be the assistant attorney general leading the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing a Justice Department official.

The Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel provides legal advice to the president and all executive branch agencies, according to the Justice Department's website.

The White House and the DOJ did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comments.

Gaiser, a former clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, was appointed as solicitor general in 2023 by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

Gaiser also clerked for Judge Edith Jones on the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.
