OpenAI previewed its latest ChatGPT model on Thursday, and it is more human and more expensive.

OpenAI unveiled GPT-4.5 on Thursday, and it is the company’s largest artificial intelligence language model to date.

“By scaling unsupervised learning, GPT‑4.5 improves its ability to recognize patterns, draw connections, and generate creative insights without reasoning,” OpenAI said in the news release.

Interacting with GPT-4.5 should feel more like talking to a real person, the company said. OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman said in a post on X that he’s had “several moments where I’ve sat back in my chair and been astonished at getting actually good advice from an AI.”

Due to what OpenAI says is, “higher emotional intelligence and creativity,” GPT-4.5 is supposed to be particularly useful for things like writing help, communication, and brainstorming, the company said.

The model isn’t only giant, but expensive. According to OpenAI, the input price for the “large and compute-intensive model” is $75 per one million tokens, compared with the $2.50 per one million tokens in GPT-4o. Tokens are bunches of text that ChatGPT reads, and OpenAI charges users of more advanced models and large developers for the amount of tokens used.

Andrej Karpathy, Tesla’s (

) former AI director and an OpenAI co-founder, wrote in a post on X that when it comes to GPT-4.5, “everything is a little bit better and it’s awesome, but also not exactly in ways that are trivial to point to. Still, it is incredible interesting and exciting as another qualitative measurement of a certain slope of capability that comes ‘for free’ from just pretraining a bigger model.”

ChatGPT Pro users will get access to GPT-4.5 on Thursday as part of a research preview. Also starting today, OpenAI investor Microsoft (

) announced that enterprise customers can access GPT-4.5 in Azure AI Foundry.
