How to get started


  1. Open a Fidelity Crypto® IRA

    At the same time, you'll link an eligible corresponding brokerage IRA to it. Don't worry—we'll open one of those for you if you don't have one.

  2. Fund and transfer

    Add money into your brokerage IRA, then transfer to your linked Fidelity Crypto® IRA.

  3. Buy and sell crypto

    Depending on the type of Fidelity Crypto IRA you choose, your potential gains can be tax-free1 (Roth) or tax-deferred (traditional or rollover).

  • Who can open a Fidelity Crypto® IRA?

    You can open a Fidelity Crypto® IRA if you’re a US citizen over the age of 18 and reside in a state where Fidelity Digital Assets® offers Fidelity Crypto® for IRAs.

  • What cryptocurrencies can I trade in a Fidelity Crypto® IRA?

    You can currently trade bitcoin, ethereum, and litecoin in a Fidelity Crypto® IRA.

  • Do I need a Fidelity brokerage IRA for my Fidelity Crypto® IRA?

    To open a Fidelity Crypto® IRA, you must also have a Fidelity brokerage IRA with the same registration type that will act as a funding account. You'll use the linked Fidelity brokerage IRA to move money into your Fidelity Crypto® IRA for trading crypto. If you don't have a Fidelity brokerage IRA, we'll open one for you at the same time we open your Fidelity Crypto® IRA.

  • What fees are associated with a Fidelity Crypto IRA?

    There are no fees to open or maintain a Fidelity Crypto® IRA, or for custody of crypto. Fidelity Digital Assets® does charge a spread of 1% on the execution price of crypto buy and sell transactions. A spread is the difference between your execution price and the price at which Fidelity Digital Assets® buys or sells digital assets to fill your order. Fees are subject to change.

  • Can I add beneficiaries to a Fidelity Crypto® IRA?

    Your Fidelity Crypto® IRA beneficiary designation is the same as the beneficiary designation on your Fidelity brokerage IRA. You can manage beneficiaries from your Fidelity brokerage IRA.
